There also wasn't a second mystery in this one--which meant more time was spent on the main plot, and, I think, let to the preponderance of clues that gave it away for me. Some lovely moments with Livia. Yet another entertaining read from this delightful series. Andrea Camilleri always has a way at looking at crimes from a slightly different perspective.
Andrea Camilleri The Inspector Montalbano Mysteries 10 Books Collection | St Stephens Books
I do like the character of Inspector Montalbano. But what is about his relationship with Livia! I look forward to returning to this series soon. Better than ever at capturing the atmosphere and the characters of Sicily. I worked out the plot fairly early on: but it didn't spoil the read, as the whodunit aspect is almost incidental in a Montalbano. Dec 27, Leslie rated it liked it Shelves: mysteries , italian. And poor Montalbano, recuperating and having Livia cooking for him instead of Adelina, didn't get as many wonderful meals in this one!
Still a solid mystery with above average writing. Apr 05, Orinoco Womble tidy bag and all rated it liked it Shelves: not-up-to-standard , roman-policier.
This book started out good but lost its spark somewhere in the middle, when Salvo starts obsessing about getting older. I don't know why Camilleri and so many other modern novelists feel they have to make their characters age, when it serves no real purpose--as we know and Salvo ruminates to the point of exhaustion, here , Montalbano never progressed through the common life stages of marriage, children etc. Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin detected for decades without aging more tha This book started out good but lost its spark somewhere in the middle, when Salvo starts obsessing about getting older.
Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin detected for decades without aging more than a year or two, though Archie does get considerably taller with the passage of time. I realised once I'd finished it that it's no wonder Salvo and Livia squabble the whole time--just like so many aging Mediterranean couples of my acquaintance, children or no children. Having seen the dramatisation, I knew what was coming, but even without that, it gives itself away very quickly. This kind of kidnap scenario has been done over and over since the s. I really couldn't give the book more than three stars, edging into two-and-a-half territory.

Nothing left to say. Each story in the series is a well told story. The books go by so quickly, they almost seem like long chapters. Salvo is recovering from his injuries from the last story but gets called back into service to assist with the latest crime. A young woman has been abducted. Who is behind this? The clues are all over the place and the kidnappers are taunting Salvo and his men.
It will take "the patience of a spider" for Salvo to figure this one out. On to the next Montalbano Nothing left to say. On to the next Montalbano installment.

The Patience of the Spider
Not my favorite in the series, but I'm such a fan that I still enjoyed it. Dec 20, Gary rated it really liked it. More serious, with Simenon in mind, even mentioned again, with the same sure hint of the solution, and the same personal justice. Aug 22, Margaret rated it it was amazing.
Very enjoyable. Especially the fact I managed to work out some of the plot from a few leads. Also very happy a new series has started on television! Apr 18, Jack Heath marked it as to-read Shelves: category-mystery , other-mpl-cd , top-daily-telegraph Synopsis: still recovering from a wound, Montalbano must penetrate a web of hatred and secrets in pursuit of one of his strangest culprits.
Aug 17, Heidi Burkhart rated it really liked it. I am really fond of the Inspector Montalbano series. This story moved on at a good pace, and kept me guessing throughout. Watching Montalbano cope with recovery from being shot, whether he wants to go on being a cop, and aging, was interesting.

This time, it's a kidnapping, but the family clearly does not have enough money to pay a ransom, so who could possibly have kidnapped Susanna? An outsider who doesn't know the family's financial standing, or was she kidnapped for some other reason? The girl has a worried boyfriend and a father who would do anything to have her back. Her mother is on her deathbed and her uncle is doing all he can to help the family.
I guessed most of the answer early on, although one piece took me longer. Overall, it's a good story. Mar 10, Skip rated it really liked it Shelves: crime-detective , foreign-translated.

As always, Montalbano using his unorthodox policing style, figures out the mystery. May 17, Andy Weston rated it really liked it. As much as any crime novel I have read and it's quite a few Camilleri creates the atmosphere. His characters are tremendous and grow in stature in every book.
The location is magical, and of course, the food is amazing. Enough to move me by bike to Sicily this summer, armed with the new novel. Rather like Conan-Doyle though, the stories are often not quite so strong. Certainly that's the only fault with this novel, but I am happy to overlook several of the more fantastical parts of a decent tale! Feb 05, Belinda rated it liked it. Enjoyable, but less so than some of his others. I think Livia got on my nerves. I also guessed the ending way before the denouement.
